What is Bike Repair?
In 2016, a small group of bike mechanics came together to meet some needs of people experiencing homelessness in Fort Collins. We knew that functioning bikes help people get where they need to go, keep appointments, get exercise, and feel like they are part of their community. We were confident that our skillset could help with those basic needs.
What we did not expect were the friendships, the stories, and seeing the impact we made at each weekly session while repairing bikes. Now over 10 years later, we offer more regular repair sessions at more locations in Larimer County from April-October and repair over 300 bikes every year in that timeframe.
Our Mobile Bike Repair shop travels to neighborhoods, shelters, and locations where we are needed most. Our program encourages transportation equity by providing safe and reliable bicycles to the low-income population and the homeless community in Northern Colorado.
We are always welcoming additional volunteers and are continually interested in learning about more locations that could use our services.
How can I help?
- Volunteer as a mechanic.
We can use help at all experience levels. This could be a great way to help others while learning bike mechanic skills.
You can find all of the Bike Repair volunteer opportunities listed HERE. - Volunteer in a support role:
If you are not a mechanic, there are other ways to serve: meet and greet our guests, kids, and families at any of our repair sessions.
We often give out toys or snacks to attendees and would welcome help in that area, for example. - Donate a working bike (email a photo of the bike to mark@homewardalliance.org first).
- Donate good useable bike parts.
- Donate funds to support the program.
You can donate directly to this program HERE.
